Grapes from this harvest have concentrated flavor and optimal balance. <br><br> <b>Winemaking Notes</b><br> Grapes for this Pinot Noir were fermented at temperatures between 78° and 82°F in stainless steel tanks. Skin contact time was tailored to each vineyard for enhanced color and flavor and to maximize the plush mouthfeel. To create aromas of vanilla and toasted coconut, we aged the wine on American and French oak.

For a cheese pairing, try an aged gouda with fig jam. <br><br> <b>VITICULTURE NOTES</b><br> For vintage 2020, we looked to Santa Barbara, Sonoma and Monterey Counties to deliver this plush and distinctive Pinot Noir, relying on a collection of estate vineyards for the majority of our fruit. Overall, the 2020 vintage was early with lower yields of exceptionally high-quality fruit. A mild winter led to an early emergence of budbreak, which had to be protected in late spring frosts. The growing season was warm and temperate throughout the summer, chilled by cool coastal breezes at night. The even-paced season was ideal developing mature, well balanced fruit. Harvest began in late August, offering beautifully structured fruit with generous flavors and exquisite complexity. <br><br> <b>WINEMAKING NOTES</b><br> We harvested whole grape clusters before de-stemming and delivering to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Following a five-day cold soak, the must fermented for seven to ten days, receiving regular punch-downs tailored to each lot. Once dry, the wine was drained to tank and barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation before aging on a combination of French and American oak. Blending took place in the summer with a special focus on maximizing the unique stylistic contributions of lots from each county.

In the seventh iteration of our Pinot Noir, Slander is solidifying its style and defining its own voice. As we strive to always overdeliver with each wine, Slander has proven difficult because of the fickle nature of the varietal. In many respects, we treat Pinot Noir differently than the rest of our red varietals; we pick it earlier and typically utilize the punchdown over the pumpover. Gentle handling in the vineyard and cellar allows us to capture these delicate aromatics and the enchanting palate of Pinot Noir. Sourced from across California, this 2020 vintage includes fruit from Annapolis, Del Rio, Radian and Our Lady of Guadalupe vineyards. <br><br> Pale ruby in the glass, the wine opens with no-fuss aromatics of bright strawberry, candied cherry, crushed gravel, wet brick, white pepper and brushed violet. Enveloping in a sophisticated, elegant manner, the palate has similar tones to the nose with some black cherry and a touch of minerality. Vibrant and energetic through the finish, the wine closes with a pleasant vein of acidity, capable of myriad pairings.

Our 2020 Apothic Pinot Noir is a bold, yet lighter-bodied, red wine. Bright layers of crushed raspberry and ripe cherry meet aromas of Tahitian vanilla. The mouthfeel is round and opulent, leading to a detailed, lingering finish. <br><br> <b>Viticulture Notes:</b><br> California’s 2020 vintage experienced a cool, mild growing season with an accelerated heat spell in August, resulting in early ripening. Vintage 2020 grapes show vibrant acidity and concentrated flavor. <br><br> <b>Winemaking Notes:</b><br> We selected Pinot Noir grapes from Lodi for their red fruit profiles and soft, approachable tannins. Syrah was blended with the Pinot Noir to complement the dark cherry flavors with soft blueberry notes. To brighten the acidity and add notes of red currant, we blended unique Graciano grapes into the wine. The grapes were destemmed with marginal crushing and cold soaked overnight to encourage extraction of the fruit’s alluring color and tannins.

Our 2021 Mark West Pinot Noir is a classic, medium-bodied red wine grown in California’s northern and central regions. This wine brims with layers of red and dark cherry that are complemented by notes of toasted oak, brown spice and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is full and plush with a long, rewarding finish. <br><br> <b>Viticulture Notes</b><br> The 2021 growing season in the northern region was accelerated with a heat spell in July, which resulted in early ripening. This vintage produced fruit with bright acidity and ripe fruit characteristics. <br><br> <b>Winemaking Notes</b><br> We selected grapes for our 2021 Pinot Noir from Lodi for their characteristics of cherry and plush tannins. Zinfandel was blended with the Pinot Noir to complement the dark fruit and add notes of spice. Graciano was blended in to darken the fruit and fill in mid-palette structure. The Pinot Noir was harvested at peak ripeness to allow easy extraction of rich, concentrated color. We fermented this wine at temperatures between 86-88°F after a overnight cold soak to create intense flavor, more saturated color and velvety tannins. The wine was aged on oak post fermentation to add complexity and balance.
