In the spring, mild weather prolonged bloom time. For the first time in five years, harvest started in August instead of July. The red berries were harvested into November, marking an extended hang time that produced concentrated flavor and saturated color.

Rattlesnake Zinfandel is a tribute to the crest called Rattlesnake Hill, the highest point of the Monte Rosso Vineyard. It’s famous for the rattlesnakes living among the vines, seeking sunshine by day and coiling around the vines at night. This Zinfandel is bold and boisterous, with intense layers black cherry, raspberry, licorice and Sichuan pepper. Vanilla and graham cracker undertones linger on the long finish this wine lives up to its name in every way, possessing a power that strikes with intense force. In 2017, heavy winter rains fueled vine growth early in the season – a warm, steady summer and fall followed, leading to a slightly early harvest with intensely fruit-driven yields. Even in slightly inconsistent years, Monte Rosso’s elevation and aspect determinedly inform astonishing, character-driven wines. The vineyard’s southwestern facing slopes drain quickly and encourage vines to reach deep into the earth for ultra-concentrated, site-specific flavors.

As our flagship wine, Mercury Head encompasses our winemaking philosophy and overall ethos. Wines that speak to location but over-deliver on quality; bottles that are more art than function; thought-provoking, intellectual and tied to the large world outside of wine. Mercury Head does all that as a quintessential Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from premier vineyards in the best growing microclimates. Stagecoach Vineyard on Atlas Peak and Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford represent the majority of the blend with small amounts from similar sites as well as a fraction from the Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma. Dark violet with a ruby crown, the wine exhibits classic Napa Cabernet aromatics with our style: black fruits—plum and cherry—dark chocolate, leather and Rutherford Dust coalesce from the glass. The entry is elegant and begins to flood the palate with notes of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, caramel and a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon: rich and bold. Seamless and focused, the wine closes with lingering dusty tannins and a touch of baking chocolate.

Mendoza-grown Malbec leads our 2019 Red Blend, providing a foundation brimming with layers of dark plum. Bonarda imparts notes of juicy dark cherries to the blend while Cabernet Sauvignon brings layers of bold dark fruit. Syrah offers finishing touches of blackberry and black pepper while light oak gives our Red Blend a rich mouthfeel and approachable wine. Tucked under the massive shoulders of the Andes Mountains in west central Argentina, the province of Mendoza is renowned for housing some of the best winegrowing regions of Argentina. The character of Mendoza wines is forged in high altitude desert vineyards irrigated by mineral rich snowmelt from glaciers and snowfields. Altitudes range from 1,000 feet to around 5,000 feet, where the foothills rise steeply toward the Andes’ peaks. High altitude means cool temperatures and clear air, and clear air means more sunlight for building flavor in the grapes, helping to make Mendoza the source of Argentina’s well-earned reputation for top quality, unique wines.
