The 2017 Bear Flag Zinfandel leads with aromas of freshly baked blueberry pie. Layers of dark, dense fruit evokes bubbly blueberries while toasted oak and vanilla notes deliver hints of flaky crust. A dash of spice subtly accents the plush, lingering mouthfeel. In 2017, fruit was sourced from select, premier vineyards within Sonoma County. When blended, each terroir adds a unique layer of flavor and creates a memorable style. In 2017, record winter rainfall replenished the soil followed by a temperate spring and bud break came as expected. In September, impressive heat hastened harvest, but subsequent cool weather restored maturation to a more gradual pace. The resulting clusters had a typical mix of large plump berries (containing juicy berry highlights and youthful tannins), tiny bead-sized berries (vibrant acidity) and ultra- ripe, shriveled berries (intense syrupy, candied hints).

The MacMurray Estate Vineyards Central Coast Pinot Noir is an approachable, bright and balanced Pinot Noir, opening with aromas of red berries and vanilla. Polished notes of ripe strawberry, cherry, plum and pomegranate feature on the layered, medium-bodied palate, accented by hints of rose petal, oak and subtle suggestions of black pepper. Smooth and silky, this Pinot Noir delivers a supple wine with attractive depth before a long, lingering finish. The majority of the grapes for our 2018 Pinot Noir were sourced from Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley in the Central Coast. These cooler growing regions are influenced by their close proximity to the Pacific Coast, allowing the fruit to linger on the vine until ripening to perfection. Heat spikes in July and August quickened the pace, but cooler temperatures slowed allowed grapes to mature and ripen evenly. Harvest began about 10 days later than previous years with larger-than-average yields and optimal quality. The grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and cold soaked for up to five days to enhance the extraction of color and flavor. We fermented in upright stainless-steel tanks at a maximum temperature of 83°F using selected yeasts. The wine was French oak aged to develop a smooth and rich mouthfeel.

Our Gnarly Vine Zinfandel grapes were picked and sorted by hand. They were then gravity fed into small, open top tanks for a two-day cold soak before primary fermentation. The wine was aged in a combination of French oak barrels (53% new) and American oak barrels (25% new) for a total of 16 months. Vibrant, juicy red raspberry pie unfurls on the palate, accented by the historic vineyard’s signature dusty earth overtones. Brothers Andrea and Dario Pieropan are committed to native varietals and minimalist winemaking, resulting in expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Pieropan family was the first to make a wine labeled for the region of Soave. The beginning of the season was cool and rainy, but June was the warmest and driest it had been in 20 years. Even temperatures and moderate rain through the rest of Summer resulted in balanced, high-quality grapes at generous yields. First released in 1971, this single-vineyard Calvarino represents the most traditional and authentic expression of Soave. Bright yellow with golden reflections, the wine opens with aromas of elderflower, summer peach and toasted almond on the nose. Complex and layered on the elegant palate, notes of tart green apple, lemon, pear and hazelnut are balanced by crisp minerality and hints of citrus zest that add lift and persistence to the long finish.
