Overall, the 2020 vintage was early with lower yields of exceptionally high-quality fruit. A mild winter led to an early emergence of budbreak, which had to be protected in late spring frosts. The growing season was warm and temperate throughout the summer, chilled by cool coastal breezes at night. The even-paced season was ideal developing mature, well balanced fruit. Harvest began in late August, offering beautifully structured fruit with generous flavors and exquisite complexity.

WINEMAKING NOTES
We harvested whole grape clusters before de-stemming and delivering to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Following a five-day cold soak, the must fermented for seven to ten days, receiving regular punch-downs tailored to each lot. Once dry, the wine was drained to tank and barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation before aging on a combination of French and American oak. Blending took place in the summer with a special focus on maximizing the unique stylistic contributions of lots from each county.

The grapes for this wine were selected from some of the most premier Napa Valley vineyards, a mix of valley floor, benchland and hillsides. All grapes were hand harvested, delivered in half-ton picking bins, then hand-sorted, destemmed and partially crushed before being gravity-fed into small open-top fermenters. The cap was alternately punched down and pumped over up to four times daily through fermentation. Once fermentation completed, the free run juice was drained and the must gently pressed in a basket press. The wine was gravity racked into French oak barrels (87% new) for malolactic fermentation and remained in individual barrel lots until the final blend was assembled and aged.

Our 2018 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is an approachable, fruit-driven wine. It offers a welcomingly round mouthfeel with ripe notes of red fruit and cherry. Delicate hints of dark chocolate and oak spice on the finish add layers of elegance and freshness, offering a rich yet balanced expression of the varietal.

Viticultural Notes
Grapes were predominantly selected from two of our renowned, crown jewel vineyards in Sonoma County: Frei Ranch in the Dry Creek Valley AVA and Barrelli Creek Vineyard in the Alexander Valley AVA. In 2018, cooler temperatures and moderate weather led to a long growing season, allowing grapes to ripen optimally. The mild weather allowed for exceptional flavor development and resulted in a slightly later harvest with beautifully balanced yields.

Winemaker Notes
After de-stemming, fermentation temperatures between 88°F and 92°F encouraged rich flavor development and a plush mouthfeel. To preserve fresh Cabernet fruit flavor, this wine was aged primarily in tank while a careful selection of French and American oak brought forth additional complexity. A touch of Petite Sirah contributed to this wine’s rich depth and round profile.

In the seventh iteration of our Pinot Noir, Slander is solidifying its style and defining its own voice. As we strive to always overdeliver with each wine, Slander has proven difficult because of the fickle nature of the varietal. In many respects, we treat Pinot Noir differently than the rest of our red varietals; we pick it earlier and typically utilize the punchdown over the pumpover. Gentle handling in the vineyard and cellar allows us to capture these delicate aromatics and the enchanting palate of Pinot Noir. Sourced from across California, this 2020 vintage includes fruit from Annapolis, Del Rio, Radian and Our Lady of Guadalupe vineyards.

Pale ruby in the glass, the wine opens with no-fuss aromatics of bright strawberry, candied cherry, crushed gravel, wet brick, white pepper and brushed violet. Vibrant and energetic through the finish, the wine closes with a pleasant vein of acidity, capable of myriad pairings.

Being stranded in a desert leaves a lot to be desired — how to get back home, where to find food, water and shelter, and thoughts of survival. For eight years in the early 2010s, Orin Swift Cellars was barred from making any Zinfandel wines. From the grape that started everything OSC, the ‘desert’ gave us an opportunity to explore the diverse range of California’s grape varietals. But, as soon as those eight years were up, we had a plan in place to pay homage to our home. The 2021 Eight Years in the Desert marks the sixth iteration of our return to the world of Zinfandel.

A deep maroon core with a ruby rim, the 2021 Eight Years in the Desert opens with aromas of wild blackberry, pepper, oatmeal raisin cookie, Sequoia forest floor, bay leaf and spices. The entry is broad and opulent with a mid-palate of brambly raspberry, black cherry, ripe blueberry and a hint of cacao. The wine has superb length through the finish with ripe tannins and a close of sweet oak.

One of many definitions of the word, abstract, is a summary of something larger, encompassing the crucial elements, making it easy to comprehend on the fly. Abstract, in its own way, is an abstract of our winemaking mission and ethos at Orin Swift. It will always have our signature approach, comprised of fruit from quality vineyards across California and creates conversations-be it about the wine or the label. For those new to Orin Swift, Abstract is a beloved starting point on a journey with us.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES
An opaque purple core with a glowing mauve rim, the 2021 Abstract brings forth opening aromas of muddled blue and blackberries with a frame of dark chocolate brownie and seasoned leather. The wine enters with class, being soft and lush, with notes of ripe plum, boysenberry and Santa Maria tri-tip. Grippy, chewy tannins, the wine closes with pleasing sarsaparilla and blackcurrant.
