This wine opens with Pinot Noir’s distinguishing bright plum and cherry notes, but then it takes a turn. The flavors are bold and more intense than the average Pinot Noir, with characteristics of summer blackberry, pomegranate and dried rose petals. Oak aging imparts hints of vanilla, baking spice and freshly roasted coffee beans. A hint of cocoa, plush tannins and a round mouthfeel lead to a satisfying finish.

About the Wine:
Our delicate La Marca Prosecco has a pale, golden straw color and sparkles with lively effervescence. Opening with aromas of fresh-picked citrus and honeysuckle blossoms, the crisp, clean palate brings fruity notes of green apple, juicy peach and ripe lemon, framed by hints of minerality. The finish is light and refreshing with a tantalizing hint of sweetness.

Winemaking Notes:
The grapes for La Marca Prosecco were selected with great care from small vineyards throughout the Prosecco DOC. After harvest, the grapes were crushed and then pressed in gentle membrane presses. The juice was allowed to cold settle before initial fermentation in upright stainless steel tanks at a maximum temperature of 65°F. The still wine was aged on its lees prior to secondary fermentation.

Recommended Cuisine:
La Marca Prosecco has the charm to stand alone as an aperitif, but it also has the body and the acidity to pair well with a range of foods, from seafood and mild cheeses to rich pasta dishes and decadent desserts.

La Marca adds sparkle to bubbly brunch bites, like classic eggs benedict, chorizo chilaquiles or chicken and waffles. For a crisp and vibrant dinner party, pair Prosecco alongside fresh-caught crab or fish tacos with endive slaw, goat cheese flatbread pizza or roasted chicken with creamy lemon La Marca sauce.

Plush, flavorful and food-friendly, pair this with roasted beet-goat cheese salad, barbequed pork ribs, cheeseburgers or rich mushroom dishes.

VITICULTURE NOTES
We looked to Monterey, Sonoma and Santa Barbara Counties to deliver this plush and distinctive Pinot Noir, relying on a collection of estate vineyards for the majority of our fruit. Overall, vintage 2021 was exceptional in California. A temperate and dry year with few temperature swings, the season was smooth, consistent and evenly paced. Dry conditions in winter and spring led vineyard managers to establish a healthy, balanced canopy early in the growing season with thoughtful water management throughout. At harvest, grapes showed beautiful concentration, advanced flavor development and ideal structure at lower-than-usual Brix levels, delivering wonderfully mature fruit into the cellar earlier than an average season. Overall, an outstanding vintage.

WINEMAKING NOTES
We harvested whole grape clusters before de-stemming and delivering to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Following a five-day cold soak, the must fermented for another five to eight days, receiving regular punch-downs tailored to each lot. Once dry, the wine was drained to tank and barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation before aging on a combination of French and American oak. Blending took place in the summer with a special focus on maximizing the unique stylistic contributions of lots from each county.

The base of our blend is comprised of fruit from vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley, with its traditional passionfruit and crisp grassy flavors. This component is complemented by the second wave of plantings in the ever expanding Awatere Valley, which is noted for the minerality and elegant characteristics the fruit gains from the region's proximity to the Pacific Ocean. For the balance of this wine, we have sought out fruit from the southern valley of Waihopai, where the gravel soils, and later, cooler ripening climate produce Sauvignon Blanc characteristics that provide the final layer of complexity and brings balance to our inaugural release of NZ. In the glass, a brilliant pale yellow reminiscent of white currants; the wine opens with an intense bouquet of gooseberries, feijoas, and ripe tropical fruits. The bright entry of fresh cut grass and preserved lemon lead to passionfruit pot de creme showcasing a long finish of fresh herbs and clean minerality.
