Story

Our story begins more than 40 years ago in the hills of Monterey County, where the Hahn family founded Smith & Hook on a converted horse & cattle ranch, launching a decades-long exploration of Central Coast wines. As Monterey’s fledgling wine industry started to take shape, Smith & Hook began to explore neighboring Paso Robles—discovering along the way a team of strong, like-minded growers in the warmer pockets of California’s craggy coastline.

Ranging from Santa Barbara north to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Central Coast wine region extends 300 miles along California’s Pacific coastline. To craft the Smith & Hook portfolio, we focus on these unique warmer regions ideal for developing rich, bold character in Bordeaux varietals.

Aromas of bing cherry, blackberry and cassis with hints of chocolate mocha and caramel. The palate is full-bodied and rich with flavors of ripe berries and dark fruit, supported by silky tannins and notes of vanilla marshmallow and layers of spice on a complex, long finish. <br><br> While below average winter rainfall led to some light early spring irrigation, the 2021 growing season continued with favorable warm spring weather that aided vines to reach max canopy height. Summer temperatures heated up and slowed down vine growth as vines transitioned into fruit development. Weather leading into harvest was relatively cool and uneventful. Moderate day temperatures and cool nights ensured extended hang times, which resulted in wines with great structure, round mouthfeel, and balanced flavors

Fresh, bright and crisp, this pale lemon-rind-colored Sauvignon Blanc features lively flavors of grapefruit, citrus and crisp pear with subtle freshcut-hay notes and vivid acidity. The finish lingers with minerality, hints of green apple, lemongrass and a touch of jalapeño. <br><br> This Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast, where consistently warm sunny days are followed by cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean at night. While below average winter rainfall led to some light early spring irrigation, the 2022 growing season continued with favorable warm weather that aided canopy growth and even berry set. Steady temperatures ensured fruit was maturing slowly allowing for gradual ripening and extended hang times. A small heat spike in late September slightly sped up the harvest but fruit still came in with beautiful acidity. <br><br> Harvested from certified sustainable vineyards, the fruit was hand-picked in the early morning, brought to the winery and destemmed. The wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the beautiful natural acidity of the grapes.
