The founding father of the Super Tuscans, Giacomo Tachis, was instrumental in crafting this flagship Super Tuscan for Argiano. The exuberant, concentrated 2017 Solengo opens with notes of violets, roses, blackberry, black currant and plum, with subtle hints of flint, cedar and tea leaf, finishing long. Smooth and full-bodied, the delicate tannins and supreme balance will allow this wine to evolve masterfully for a decade or more.

Note: Label packaging may vary. A paradox can catch you off guard. A powerful punch and a delicate touch – this Petite Sirah-based blend manages to be both. And the labels? Iconic, but never the same. With fruit sourced from all over the state, Machete is a culmination of bird-dogging some of the best Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Syrah vineyards in California. Double-blind tasted to assure the highest quality fruit, making the cut isn’t easy. Tasting Notes: Pure inky garnet in the glass, the aromatics of plum compote, wild blackberries, crushed gravel, peanut brittle, and Tahitian vanilla emanate. Massive on the entry, the mid-palate is diverse with flavors of dark plums, black pepper, Amarena cherries, slow-roasted Moroccan lamb and a marbled leather texture. Rich, enveloping, and vivacious, the wine finishes with perpetuating energy and length—not to mention the satisfying tannins that rouse a desire for more.

Poggio al Tesoro is Marilisa Allegrini’s property in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. It’s here that she works with international varietals in the Super Tuscan tradition. 'Mediterra' is a Syrah based blend made just outside of the Bolgheri DOC and is Poggio al Tesoro's most accessible and versatile wine. Wet conditions in the spring were mitigated by a sunny and breezy summer, but still necessitated significant thinning in order to foster airflow. Grapes at harvest were of high quality.

Over the course of six generations, the Allegrini family has established themselves as one of the benchmark producers of the Valpolicella region. Allegrini's Palazzo della Torre is one of their most famous and accessible wines, with 30% of the blend made in the appassimento style. Palazzo della Torre is a velvety, well-balanced red blend, offering mature, concentrated notes of dark fruit layered with hints of spice on the rich, full-bodied palate. Sophisticated and elegantly structured with soft tannins, Palazzo della Torre’s spicy vanilla, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon characteristics are contrasted with notes of black cherry, plum and dried fruit. Valpolicella escaped the difficulties faced in other Italian regions during the the 2017 vintage. Rainfall was lower than average, but within an acceptable norm. The season was dry and breezy and large diurnal swings ensured that the grapes came in healthy.

With a style that balances concentration and complexity with harmony and finesse, this masterfully crafted Bordeaux blend has quickly become a classic in Bolgheri. Grown in two estate vineyards, the region is known for its terroir-driven wines. Perfectly ripened grapes and painstaking work in the cellar gave us a 2017 Sondraia with intense ruby red color and an aromatic, perfumed nose. Elegant on the palate, nuances of cherry, plum and blackberry blend with notes of chocolate, anise and spice. Silky-smooth, well-structured and balanced, with fine-grained tannins resulting in a wine of great class. The spring brought regular rainfall, fostering uniform development of buds. The summer was dry and airy, and rains in early September enabled balanced ripening of the grapes.

Allegrini's Valpolicella DOC shows the typicity of Valpolicella's native varietals in a a fresh and versatile wine. Brilliant ruby red in color, with a pleasant scent of wild berries. Dry and velvety on the palate, it is characterized by a bitter almond finish.

At Orin Swift, we have been fortunate to have access to a wide range of vineyards across California. Luckily, this diversity of sources meant that the horrific fires of 2020 spared most of our fruit. Carefully tasted, tested and tasted again, we made sure any lots included in our 2020 wines were free of smoke taint. Abstract being one of our largest blends, we were diligent with the process of evaluating the wines; a patchwork of individual lots that retain some of their character but meld seamlessly together—like the collage—is why this wine is always a team favorite. The 2020 Abstract pours a neon purple splash and an opaque maroon core with dark aromatics upfront. Black plum, boysenberry and hints of bing cherry and lavender invite a taste. On the palate, the aromatics turn into the sense of taste along with a touch of dark chocolate and reduced blackberry. Supple drying tannins and a slight chalky texture close the wine with a calming finish.

Renato Ratti founded his winery in 1965 and was the first to map the region of Barolo, paving the way for the commercial idea of terroir in Italy. After Renato’s death in 1988, his son Pietro has carried on his father’s legacy, Ratti's Nebbiolo was first released in 1969. A cold and rainy spring replenished the water resources in the soil. A warm and sunny summer with significant daily diurnal range gave ideal conditions for fruit development. Harvest occurred in late September.

Working with Zinfandel requires using the Goldilocks Principle: Pick it too early and you end up with a stemmy wine. Pick it too late and you risk a stuck fermentation. Pick it just right... well, what do you think? 2019 marks the third release of our eight-part passion play known as 8 Years in the Desert. As we meander through the coming years and remaining vintages, the wine, as well as the labels on the bottle, will continue to evolve. If we do our jobs right, the wine should only get better.  The labels have a bit more of a pre-ordained nature — they’re all born from the original eight featured in the limited edition. Each vintage will revisit the original labels in sequential order. Some of you know them all, some of you only know label #1. Some will like what comes next, some will hate it. But suffice to say they are all cut from a similar cloth.  As with the previous four vintages, our 2019 blend combines the heart and body of Zinfandel with the nuance and complexity of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Grenache. Sourced from quality vineyards like Monte Rosso, Bismark, Korte, and Frei Ranch, 8 Years in the Desert uses only our favorite lots of each grape. Double-blind tasted and aged over a ten-month period, we are very proud of our 2019 vintage and hope you enjoy it now and for many years to come. Tasting Notes: Evolving aromatics present themselves first with black and white pepper, then a ripe fruit core of brambly raspberry and sweet persimmon, finishing with savory notes of allspice, clove and fig leaf. Boisterous yet elegant on entry, the wine shows its plush layers with distinctive strawberry preserves, blackberry and raspberry pie topped with fresh crème. Round, ripe tannins close the palate menacingly, leaving one with a desperate thirst for more.

Argiano is one of the oldest winemaking estates in Montalcino and a cofounder of the Consorzio di Brunello di Montalcino. Since joining the winery in 2010, winemaker Bernardino Sani has embraced organic practices and minimized winemaking intervention. Argiano's Brunello is the winery's benchmark expression of this philosophy. 2016 is a bona fide classic vintage. Where 2015 showed the powerful side of Brunello, 2016 will show its grace and structure. A wet spring kept water resources replenished throughout the season. A warm, even summer with cool nights gave balance and depth. Harvest occurred in mid-September. On the well-structured palate, juicy notes of cherry, plum and blackberry blend with hints of soft leather and licorice. Medium-bodied, this Brunello has fine, soft tannins, refreshing acidity and a persistent, lingering finish.
