    Syrah/Shiraz

    California

We like straight talk about wine. One writer called this bottle “…a really, really good Shiraz.” Is that straight enough? The Syrah grape can yield lean, intellectual wines in France’s Rhone Valley. This is not one of those wines. This is like the Aussie version: round, full and ripe, with jammy blackberry flavors.

We can’t think of a wine that is easier to like.

South Eastern Australia really set the standard for enjoyable Syrah (oh, excuse us, Shiraz), and put this variety onto tables in a big way around the world. The grape is a powerhouse of flavor and texture that thrives in the bright sun and ancient soils Down Under.

Very dark, almost purple color, with a nice medium body. Bold flavors of black cherry and dark berries, with the classic notes of pepper and spice. Soft tannins.

If you like Rhône-style wines, Arabesque will make you pirouette. An homage to the signature red blends of France’s southern Rhône Valley, this wine blends Grenache and Syrah with some of the lesser known Rhône varietals: Counoise, Cinsault and Mourvedre. Winemaker David Hopkins also adds a little Viognier to introduce a delicate floral note.

Echoes a rich Côtes du Rhône Villages or a baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Flavors of smoke, cigar box, cherry and pomegranate hint at the complex layers in the glass.

Bridlewood built its reputation on Syrah, and this is a good example of its signature style. The wine is built to last. Extra time in the bottle shows up in perfectly integrated flavors, smooth tannins and expressive character. The blend is a Rhône model, modified for California’s abundant sun.

A rich array of dark fruit, plum, cherry and fresh raspberries, highlighted by spicy cloves and vanilla notes. The long finish will make roasted meats melt in your mouth.

Here is another medal-winning Syrah from this artisan winery in Santa Barbara County. Using fruit from several Central Coast vineyards, winemaker David Hopkins is on a “red fruit” flavor path with this one. His wines always show balance and restraint, with layer upon layer of flavor.

David says this wine is reminiscent of “fresh raspberries eaten off the vine.” We also found blackberry, cherry and that spiciness that defines well-made Syrah.

Old vines (70+ years), self-rooted, dry farmed— a recipe for rich, enduring wines. Add to that the “old clone” heritage, and you have a Syrah to collect, savor and enjoy.

Roman Bratasiuk’s quintessential wine is nothing short of stunning. Cassis and countless sweet red and black fruits on the nose. Intense flavors of blueberries, plum, roasted meat, truffles, violet and vanilla. Notice the subtle tones of pepper and cedary oak. Finishes with plenty of flavor and rousing intensity.

Relatively young vines (1995) and a dry season add up to a massive Syrah. Harvested by hand as each row ripened. High skin to pulp ratios gave incredible concentration to the flavors.

This ruby colored wine has classic aromas of black berries, smokey bacon and leather. A supple and generous offering, well textured on the palate. Brings flavors of black plums and currants. Smoky with a spicy finish.

Brookman Vineyard vines date back to 1925, rooted in gravel and clay. They are yielding grapes with balanced flavors, ample sugars and classic Syrah character.

An aristocratic wine, this Syrah has notes of boysenberry and blackberries with hints of spice cake and vanilla. Full throttle flavors to the finish: licorice, currants, spice and acacia flowers. Well-integrated tannins and an extended finish.

Some of winemaker Roman Bratusiak’s most distinctive wines come from this vineyard. Fermented with wild yeast that comes in with the hand-picked grapes, this wine truly speaks of the place where it was born.

The crimson and purple color hints at an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis, smoke, licorice and espresso. On the palate, the wine has fabulous flavors of licorice, red raspberries, cherries, currant and espresso.

Winemaker Roman Bratasiuk calls this the “smoking gun” among his range of single-vineyard Syrahs. He compares this one to the wines of the Côte Rôtie of the Northern Rhône.

Inky, glass staining purple in color, this wine is polished and aristocratic. Expansive floral bouquet of boysenberry, candied plum and kirsch. A generous expression of flavor: dark berries, cinnamon, subtle bacon and eucalyptus. Long, open finish.
