This is a wine you can explore for a second while it’s on your palate. Notice the balance in the tannins. We get dark berries and ripe cherries, warm mocha, white pepper and other spices typical of a great Zinfandel. If this isn’t the perfect barbecue wine, we’ll turn in our “Kiss the Chef” aprons.

The fruit is the star of this California Zin, much of it coming from the Lodi appellation. Lodi has a great reputation for Zin. The vineyards enjoy abundant sun, as well as the cooling breezes from the north end of San Francisco Bay, where the land rises to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

The fruit flavors include all the Zin classics: blueberry, blackberry, black cherry. Also typical of good Zin: black pepper and vanilla spice. Nice, soft tannins.

Gallo describes this as a “casual” wine. We take that to mean it’s easy to enjoy without dressing up. Call your friends for a low-key get together, and open a bottle. Light alcohol (8.5 %) makes it great on its own or next to simple food. Try it chilled.

Bright red color. Appetizing floral aroma, with fresh berry flavors, bright raspberry. Smooth, refreshing finish. Keep some on hand in your fridge.

The 2007 Frei Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel has intense varietal characters of ripe currants and red jam, which are matched with a rich, full structure that adds length and complexity. Intensity is gained by carefully managing the vines, and the elegance is preserved by gentle handling in the winery and aging in oak barrels.

Gallo winemakers put a lot of Russian River Valley cool climate fruit into this wine. That adds a structural dimension and some red fruit flavors. They also blended in a little Petite Syrah, which gives the wine more substance. Not a silly Zin.

Zin lovers will find every flavor they expect: jammy raspberry, blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, warm vanilla spice.

Sourcing from both the Sonoma and San Joaquin appellations allows the Ghost Pines winemaker to blend a wine which accentuates the best of what each region has to offer. Sonoma County Zinfandel offers lush fruit, with savory dark spices and concentrated intensity. The San Joaquin County Zinfandel adds jammy red raspberry and strawberry flavors along with a strong, rich structure. The result is our 2008 Ghost Pines Zinfandel, opening with bright flavors of strawberry jam and ripe plum, and aromas of vanilla bean and mocha. Full and balanced, our Zinfandel boasts rich, chewy tannins that lead to a long and supple finish.

The Dry Creek Valley is Ground Zero in the Zin Zone. Zin Central.
Zin City. Home of Rancho Zabaco, of course. Winemaker Eric Cinnamon gets these grapes off benchlands elevated above the creek, and he treats this treasure with care.

Very full-bodied, with rich red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Nice spicy character hitting high notes over the moderate toasted oak bass line. Go wild: pair with venison or boar.

Sonoma County Zinfandel has to be the best in the world. Zin has been in the ground there for 150 years, and its “heritage” includes the entire history of winemaking in northern California. Winemaker Eric Cinnamon is part of that heritage, now making sophisticated wines like this one.

Easy to like immediately. Ripe flavors of blueberries, black cherry and spice. Hints of vanilla and toasted oak from the aging regime.

How do you begin to describe a $60 Zin? Magnificent would be a start. Rare (230 cases). Exotic. Amazing. Great gift for your boss or for yourself. Nothing like it. Completely handmade. Very sophisticated. Old Vine Zin from Sonoma’s legendary Monte Rosso Vineyard.

Lots of spice in elegant bursts, a tempest of mature fruit flavors, then another layer of spice: pepper and clove. Chocolate and vanilla flavors from the French oak.

The mountaintop Monte Rosso Vineyard is a legend in wine country. Winemakers fight over who gets the fruit. Very old vines. Very high up. Red iron soil. You see the name on rare and exquisite wines. Winemaker Eric Cinnamon loves the place, and that love comes through in this wine.

Not shy at 14.9 % alcohol, but balanced, detailed and structured under the robust array of flavors. Let it evolve in the glass. Aromas of fresh berries, spice, briar and earth. Rancho Zabaco calls it “refined intensity.” We couldn’t agree more.
