Maybe the next popular wine movie will feature a couple of guys on a search for the perfect Merlot. If they start with this one, it’ll be a short movie. A round, luscious, satisfying wine.

Look for the hint of anise under boysenberry and milk chocolate flavors. You might even try putting a little chill on it to get an entertaining evolution in the glass.

There is a wine tourism route in northwest Italy called “La Strada del Merlot” through the valley of the Isonzo River. Merlot is very well established, and well made, in Italy. Bella Sera’s winemakers used small steel fermenters to get good contact between the skin and the juice, and they put a portion of the wine on oak to blend back for complexity.

Deep scarlet color, with aromas of raspberry and plum. Medium body, round, with a smooth finish.

South Eastern Australia is famous for its “wines of the sun.” Rich, ripe wines that are loaded with flavor and value. This Merlot is a good example of that genre: solid but soft, good winemaking.

All the Merlot-ish berry aromas and flavors are here. Ripe cherry and red and black berries. An herbal highlight adds interest before the smooth finish of vanilla and toasted oak.

The hard clay soils of the Brookman Vineyard come up through this Merlot in both flavor and structure. Winemaker Roman Bratasiuk calls this wine “persistent” in flavor and opulent in character.

This intense Merlot offering is dark ruby in color. Aromas of herbs, rich blueberries, blackberries and hints of coffee bean. On the palate, the wine reveals intense flavors of dark chocolate, plums, mocha and earth spices. A Merlot with wonderful layered precision and elegance.

Here’s more proof that you can have a big, lush, ripe wine without an over-the-top alcohol level. At 13.5% alcohol, this is a wine you can stick with during dinner. Here’s living proof that Merlot deserves its place as America’s favorite red wine.

Merlot lovers will be right at home with the ripe flavors of dark fruit, blackberry and black cherry, with a bit of spice and a velvety finish that really zings.

Plush, ripe Merlot plus deep, structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Bordeaux varieties were widely planted in the Friuli region of Tre Venezie during the 19th Century, and Merlot and Cabernet are among the most successful, locally and for export.

With 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet, and not a touch of oak, this is a good example of how to make a fruit-forward wine with character. Ripe berries, dark fruit and spice flavors.

Here is an example of how old traditions and new styles merge in Italian winemaking today. Merlot has been growing well in Italy since the middle of the 19th Century and has recently come into its own, not only for its blending charms, but for its distinctive character as the lead grape in a varietal wine.

Deep red, but not opaque. Mid-weight, big fruit and accessible. Classic soft Merlot character. Blackberry, cherry and spice flavors.

Andrew Frei, who put his name on this Dry Creek winery back in the 1890s, would love this Merlot. A big, round blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon for structure. Dark ruby, but not heavy. Full malolactic fermentation, and aging in French and European oak produced a luscious, well-integrated wine.

Classic Merlot flavors: blackberry and cherry, a little spice, a little vanilla, not too much oak. Very balanced, with a long, lush finish.

Who among us likes lots of flavor in a glass of wine? Of course, we all do. Gallo gets a lot of flavor and character into this Merlot. Careful winemaking (think temperature control and continuous monitoring) leads to a wine that retains good varietal typicity in a delicious, approachable style.

Black cherry and ripe plum flavors. Deep and well-rounded. Soft and supple in the mouth. Delicious.
